Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio or "SEER" is the rating that helps you understand the efficiency of your home heating and cooling system and how much a particular unit will save you in energy costs. Think of SEER for your HVAC system as MPG for your car. A car with higher MPG is more fuel efficient and will save you money. An HVAC unit with a higher SEER rating will help you achieve energy savings.

Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency or "AFUE" shows you how much fuel is utilized and how much fuel is lost in a particular heating system. New heating systems are much more efficient than they used to be. If your home heating system is 10 years old or older, it could be about 60% efficient-meaning just 60 cents of every dollar you spend in gas to fuel the machine is actually utilized, and 40 cents is lost in the flue pipe.
